In a recent interview with People magazine, the family has shone a light into this new reality they are living, and Jamie Lee explained how the change has helped her to gain a better understanding of her child. Ruby, 25, came out as transgender last year, and though the news were surprising, Jamie Lee affirmed, “I’m a grateful student. It’s learning new terminology and words.”

“I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I’m going to blow it, I’m going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes.” Any parent would feel the same, and Jamie shares her youngest daughter Ruby with husband Christopher Guest.

Ruby herself shared her own personal experience of gearing up to come out to her parents: “It was scary — just the sheer fact of telling them something about me they didn’t know. It was intimidating — but I wasn’t worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life.”

Ruby texted her mom the big news. Jamie Lee remembers: “I called her immediately. Needless to say, there were some tears involved.” This is obviously new territory for the family, and Jamie wasn't shy about this reality. “You slow your speech down a little. You become a little more mindful about what you’re saying. How you’re saying it. You still mess up, I’ve messed up today twice. We’re human."

The interview is sure to inspire other people looking to come out, and maybe give them the courage to do it themselves.
