Roger Vadim and a Daughter in 1968
Fonda’s first husband was screenwriter and director Roger Vadim. The pair married in 1962 after Vadim had already been married twice. Their daughter, Vanessa Vadim, was born in 1968. The marriage ended in 1973, but they continued to co-parent their child after the split. Years later, Fonda reflected on how she fit into Vadim’s world. “And I took it as a compliment!” Jane Fonda said. Vadim later married two more times before his death from cancer in 2000 at age 72.
Tom Hayden Became Vanessa’s Stepfather
In 1973, Fonda married activist and author Tom Hayden. He became stepfather to Vanessa and soon built a larger family with Fonda. Their son, Troy Garity, was born in 1973, and Mary Williams was adopted into the family. Their marriage lasted until 1990, making it the longest of Fonda’s three marriages. After their separation, Hayden married once more and later adopted another son, Liam. He died in 2016 at age 76, leaving behind a long record in political activism as well as family life.
Ted Turner Joined Jane Fonda’s Blended Family
Jane Fonda’s third husband was Ted Turner, the founder of CNN. The couple married in 1991, at a time when Turner was already one of the most influential names in media and philanthropy. During their marriage, Turner became stepfather to Fonda’s three children, while Fonda also joined a blended family that included Turner’s five children from previous relationships.
Their marriage ended in 2001, and Turner never remarried after the divorce. In 2018, he revealed that he had been living with Lewy body dementia, adding another emotional chapter to the story of their years together. Turner died on May 6, 2026, at the age of 87.
