Jimmy Fallon has addressed the backlash surrounding a clip of him in blackface during an SNL sketch in 2000.
The controversy began on Tuesday after the hashtag "#JimmyFallonIsOverParty" trended on Twitter. Visuals of the former SNL cast member in blackface impersonating comedian Chris Rock circulated, leading some to call for Fallon's removal from his hosting duties on NBC's The Tonight Show.
Others, meanwhile, wanted Fallon to acknowledge the mistake, or placed the blame on SNL.
Fallon clearly took note of the trend, issuing a statement of apology on Tuesday afternoon.

"In 2000, while on SNL, I made a terrible decision to do an impersonation of Chris Rock while in blackface. There is no excuse for this," Fallon's Twitter apology began.
"I am very sorry for making this unquestionably offensive decision and thank all of you for holding me accountable."

Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show is on re-runs this week
Fallon has yet to address the topic on The Tonight Show, which has shifted to an at-home production during the COVID-19 lockdown. The host is also off for the week of May 25-29, as the talk show is airing a "Best of Fallon" week.
Chris Rock hasn't commented on the controversy either. He was an SNL cast member in the early 1990s, but not at the time of Fallon's sketch.
Both Fallon's Tonight Show and SNL are NBC programs, as well.
