It was a tough crowd, with more hecklers than supportive friends. His early career was less 'The Tonight Show' and more 'The Kitchen Sink of Comedy,' with gigs that ranged from obscure bars to questionable corporate events where he probably had to explain who he was multiple times. Yet, through the haze of mediocrity, he honed his craft and developed that trademark blend of neuroses and wit that would eventually earn him a legion of fans.

Suddenly, Maron was interviewing everyone from Louis C.K. to President Obama, all while channeling that same angst that once filled the backrooms of comedy clubs. It was like watching your favorite uncle become the cool uncle who now hosts dinner parties with actual guests instead of just his cats. His podcast became a cultural phenomenon, proving that sometimes, the key to success is just getting really, really good at complaining into a microphone.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m familiar with coke. I’m familiar with anger. I’m familiar with bullying. I’m familiar with selfishness. But at the core of all that I know that I’m a sensitive person, so I knew that would translate,” he says on stage.

His personal life has been challenging for him. It's a great source of his comedy in the end. In an interview with 'The Guardian' he said, “Well, you know, my second divorce was probably the most devastating thing I ever went through. I do have some closure around all that stuff, but I can get back into that place. You know, if you get someone talking about a divorce, especially if you’re a man who’s been screwed over by one, the angry passion just comes right back,” he says.

Maron has been married twice. The first marriage, in his early 30s, failed because “I was bad news – angry, druggie, drunk”; the second fell apart at least partly because he was needy after his then wife, writer Mishna Wolff, helped him get sober. “But the neediness was gnarled. You can’t ever say, ‘I need your support.’ You say, ‘You don’t love me.’ ‘Yes, I do.’ ‘No, you don’t.’ Then there’s fighting, crying, and then you’re like, ‘OK, you do love me,’” he says, with a rueful smile.

His "anger" is what has made him a bit of a household name in comedy circles. "I don't experience too much hate about people's comedy or music. If I'm going to have resentment, it's going to be for personal reasons. I don't know whether it's getting older or realizing how difficult it is to put anything out into the world, or what. I can hear someone's music and know that it's not really my thing, but it is a thing and people dig it, and I'll find something interesting about them to talk about. I do have a hard time with people that I don't respect, but it's not because of what they're making," he says.
