Rock Hudson as “Stewart McMillan” — Before his main role on the series Hudson was a very successful movie actor, starring in ‘Magnificent Obsession’, ‘All That Heaven Allows’, and ‘Giant’ in his first years. He earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor for ‘Giant’. Later, he co-starred in ‘Pillow Talk’, ‘ Lover Come Back’, and ‘Send Me No Flowers’. By 1971, he felt unhappy with the films offered to him, and so he began his television career with ‘McMillan & Wife’.

Susan Saint James as “Sally McMillan” — James began her career in 1966 by appearing in the TV movie ‘Fame Is the Name of the Game’, an appearance that would later further her career when it became a series and then again in 1968 when she was cast for ‘The Name of the Game’, where she won an Emmy Award for her role as “Peggy Maxwell”.  ‘McMillan & Wife’ is a crime and police series that aired on NBC from 1971 to 1977. The series stars Rock Hudson as “Stewart McMillan”, an attorney and US Navy veteran who is appointed as Commissioner of Police for the city of San Francisco; Susan Saint James as “Sally McMillan”, wife of “Stewart” and daughter of the former chief of police of the SFPD — who often helps her husband with police work; and John Schuck as “Sgt. Charles Enright”, second in command after “Stewart”.

A Last Resort That Ended Up Being Promising

According to IMDb, Rock Hudson did not like the show and did not want in on it but ended up agreeing because of the bad films he was being offered. “When they wanted McMillan & Wife to go to two hours I said, 'Why? The thing doesn't even hold up for ninety minutes!'." The series ended up having six seasons.
