'McMillan & Wife': What Happened To The Stars?

Rock Hudson as “Stewart McMillan” — Before his main role on the series Hudson was a very successful movie actor, starring in ‘Magnificent Obsession’, ‘All That Heaven Allows’, and ‘Giant’ in his first years. He earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor for ‘Giant’. Later, he co-starred in ‘Pillow Talk’, ‘ Lover Come Back’, and ‘Send Me No Flowers’. By 1971, he felt unhappy with the films offered to him, and so he began his television career with ‘McMillan & Wife’.

Susan Saint James as “Sally McMillan” — James began her career in 1966 by appearing in the TV movie ‘Fame Is the Name of the Game’, an appearance that would later further her career when it became a series and then again in 1968 when she was cast for ‘The Name of the Game’, where she won an Emmy Award for her role as “Peggy Maxwell”. From 1971 to 1976 she received four Emmy Award Nominations for her role in ‘McMillan & Wife’.

John Schuck as “Sgt. Charles Enright” — Schuck is mostly known for his role in ‘McMillan & Wife’ but also appeared in multiple other shows. Among some of the most popular ones, although he had a smaller role, is ‘Babylon 5’, ‘Star Trek’, and ‘Law & Order’.

Nancy Walker as “Mildred” — Walker had an excellent start in Hollywood, obtaining recurring roles and guest appearances for the first 20 years of her career. After that, she had a prominent character as ‘Ida Morgenstern’ in ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ which later turned into another similar role in the spin-off ‘Rhoda’. Between ‘Rhoda’ and ‘McMillan & Wife’, she earned seven Emmy Award nominations.

Martha Raye as “Agatha” — Raye did not find much success in films at first and so joined the United Service Organizations, where she would provide entertainment for the U.S. military and their families during WWII. Sadly, she tried to commit suicide and was saved by a church. After that she made various guest appearances in TV shows including ‘McMillan & Wife’; she ended up coming back as “Agatha” for the next season.

Bill Quinn as “Police Chief Paulson” — Quinn began his career in 1920 and appeared in over 150 roles over seven decades, including radio, such as a detective on ‘Little Herman’. Some of the more known shows where he made an appearece are ‘Star Trek V: The Final Frontier’, ‘U.N.C.L.E.’, ‘Hawaii-Five-O’, ‘The Odd Couple’, and ‘McMillan & Wife’.

Mildred Natwick as “Beatrice McMillan” — A prominent film persona, she began her career at 21 and found stardom in her 40s, earning two Tony Award nominations for ‘The Waltz of the Toreadors’, one Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in ‘Barefoot in the Park’, and winning one Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her role in ‘Do Not Fold, Spindle, or Mutilate’. She was also known for many minor roles in both television and film.

Linda Watkins as “Emily Hull” (“Sally”’s Mother) — Watkins was better known for her television roles such as ‘77 Sunset Strip’, ‘Hazel’, and ‘The Doris Day Show’. She did co-star in ‘Cheaters at Play’ in 1932.

Richard Gilliland as “Sgt. Steve DiMaggio” — Gilliland participated in over 40 movies and series over the course of four decades. Some of his most known work includes ‘The Waltons’, ‘Party of Five’, ‘Little Women’, and ‘The Unit’. He was also known for playing “Captain Stan Cotter” in ‘24’.
