The actor took on the role of a father for Melissa in the series. When Michael Landon died from pancreatic cancer in 1991, it hit Melissa Gilbert hard.

Thirty-one years later, she commemorates Michael Landon with a post on the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network website. She writes: "July 1, 2022. Today is the 31st anniversary of the death of one of the most influential people in my life and I am so, so sad."
