Bannister’s health had deteriorated significantly in recent months. According to his wife, he had been living with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease. She also said that he had been exposed to Agent Orange during his military service in the Vietnam War.

His physical condition eventually became so severe that his limbs grew stiff and he could barely move on his own. Because Gigi Bannister was dealing with health problems herself, she was no longer able to safely lift or reposition him. The family therefore had to seek a care facility capable of providing him with round-the-clock support.

'Phantasm' Turned Him Into a Horror Icon

Bannister’s place in horror history was cemented by his role as Reggie in Don Coscarelli’s cult classic 'Phantasm', released in 1979. He starred alongside A. Michael Baldwin and Bill Thornbury in the film, which went on to become the beginning of a long-running franchise.

Bannister ultimately reprised the role across five 'Phantasm' films. As Reggie, an ice cream vendor who becomes a determined fighter against the mysterious Tall Man, he developed a character that became a defining part of the series and a fan favorite.

He Remained a Familiar Face Beyond the Franchise

Bannister continued working in film and television outside the Phantasm series, appearing in numerous productions throughout his career.
