With the advent of sound in motion pictures and the apex of the studio system, Classic Hollywood cinema came into being. Its peak occurred between the late 1930s and 1960s.
A number of masterpieces were produced during this era of filmmaking because of the number of films being made. This high volume of production allowed studios every once in a while to take a risk on making a movie that had only a modest budget, favourable script and unknown cast. These wagers would sometimes change filmmaking forever as was the case with Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.
