On Wednesday, February 26, Gene Hackman (†95) and his wife Betsy (†65) were found dead in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 95-year-old Gene was found in the entryway while 65-year-old Betsy lay in the bathroom surrounded by spilled medication. The authorities suspect that the couple had been dead for days. The circumstances of their deaths are puzzling and have prompted an extensive investigation.

Gene Hackman and his wife found dead in Santa Fe

Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, who had been married since 1991, were discovered by an exterminator who visited the house. When no one responded to his knock, he alerted a neighborhood security guard, who saw the bodies through a window and called the police.

In addition to the bodies, a dead German shepherd was also found, while two other dogs survived and are now being cared for by a family friend.

Speculation about the cause of death

James Gill, Connecticut's chief pathologist, spoke to 'People' about the circumstances and ruled out a joint suicide because the two were found in different locations.

"I've seen cases like that — usually they're together in bed," said Gill. Gene Hackman suffered from heart problems and wore a pacemaker which, according to Sheriff Adan Mendoza, last worked on February 17.

Gill speculated that Gene may have died of heart failure, which could also explain the death of the dog, which could not survive without food and water.

Investigations and expert opinions

The investigation is focusing on determining the exact time of the couple's death. Modern pacemakers with WiFi or Bluetooth could help by recording irregular heart rhythms. The question of whether Betsy died before or after Gene remains unanswered. "What's the time [of Gene's death] related to his wife? When did she die? That’s a little bit of a more gray area, I think," said Gill.
