His risqué style, often relying on double entendres and bold humor, was a departure from the more sanitized comedy of the time. Foxx became a master of "blue" humor—dirty jokes, sex talk, and controversial subjects that shocked audiences. His distinctive voice, timing, and irreverence won him an audience, especially among African-American audiences who found his brashness both daring and refreshing.

Foxx's career really took off in the 1960s, during a time when comedy was changing rapidly in America. His act, which was steeped in the rhythms of black culture, drew attention from both black and white audiences. Foxx was among the first black comedians to achieve prominence on the national stage, largely through his appearances on variety shows, comedy albums, and nightclub performances.
It was his appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ in the 1960s that first introduced Redd Foxx to a wider white audience. He was one of the few black comics to appear regularly on mainstream television at the time, marking a significant breakthrough in racial barriers within the entertainment industry. His sharp commentary on race relations, politics, and societal norms resonated with many, making him a staple of the comedy world.

The comic’s legendary reputation was also built on his ability to improvise and read the room. Foxx’s stand-up performances were notoriously unpredictable. He was often known for switching up his jokes based on audience reactions, always in control of the situation, and always ready with a quip. Foxx's comedy was not just about telling jokes; it was about engaging the audience and making them feel as though they were part of an intimate exchange. His routines, which often featured pointed social commentary, were a blend of high-energy performance and biting satire.
Foxx's most enduring contribution to television was undoubtedly his role as "Fred G. Sanford" on the groundbreaking sitcom 'Sanford and Son', which aired from 1972 to 1977 on NBC. The show was a remake of the British series ‘Steptoe and Son’, but Foxx's version brought his trademark flair and humor to the American audience, turning "Fred G. Sanford" into a cultural icon.

In the show, "Fred Sanford" is a cantankerous junk dealer who frequently feuds with his son, "Lamont Sanford", played by Demond Wilson. The show explored themes of generational conflict, family dynamics, and poverty, all while providing a platform for Foxx to showcase his unique comedic style. With its sharp wit and irreverent humor, 'Sanford and Son' became a massive hit, garnering critical acclaim and a devoted following. It was one of the first sitcoms to portray a working-class African-American family in a more nuanced light, and Foxx's performance was central to the show's success.

The character of "Fred Sanford" became a blueprint for future sitcom dads, characterized by his abrasive, sarcastic nature and his deep love for his family, despite his gruff exterior. Foxx’s quick wit and sharp one-liners, including his now-famous "This is the big one!"—a catchphrase he used whenever his character was pretending to have a heart attack—became part of television history.

While 'Sanford and Son' was one of Foxx's biggest achievements, it was not without its challenges. Foxx had a tumultuous relationship with the show's producers, and after a brief departure from the show in 1977, he made a triumphant return in 1978. However, tensions remained high, and after a series of disagreements, Foxx left the series for good in 1979, marking the end of one of the most iconic television characters in history.

Though Foxx was a comedic force of nature, his personal life was marked by both struggles and triumphs. After 'Sanford and Son' ended, Foxx sought other acting opportunities. He starred in films such as 'Cotton Comes to Harlem', 'Trouble Man', and 'The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington'. Despite his success, Foxx's film career never reached the same level as his television prominence. His comedic style was often more suited for television or live performances rather than the more conventional film roles available at the time.

Foxx also had his share of financial and personal issues. Despite his success, he struggled with money management, and his private life was often troubled by a string of failed marriages and health problems. At one point, Foxx was living in poverty, facing numerous financial challenges and personal hardships. His life was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, filled with bouts of fame, but also periods of decline. Foxx's comedic brilliance was always overshadowed by his personal demons. His reputation for being difficult to work with, his battles with alcohol and his health, and his temperamental nature made him a controversial figure in the entertainment industry. But despite his personal struggles, Foxx continued to perform and make people laugh until his death.
