• Regina King is facing major grief
  • Her son recently took his own life
  • THIS is how Regina is handling things now

The 'If Beale Street Could Talk' star discusses the impact of her loss, her emotional return to the spotlight, and how she honors her son's memory in her latest work.

Regina has to find a way to move forward

In an emotional outpouring on 'Good Morning America,' Regina King, the celebrated Oscar-winning actress, laid bare her soul about the profound changes in her life since the heartbreak of losing her son, Ian Alexander Jr., to suicide over a year ago.

"Grief is a journey," she confessed, a testament to a mother's enduring love and the pain that follows when it has nowhere to go.

King, grappling with an unimaginable loss, admitted to feeling "a lot of guilt" and anger towards the divine. "Why would that weight be given to Ian?" she questioned, echoing the torment that haunts parents in the wake of such tragedy.

Yet, through her tears, King revealed a hard-won understanding of her son's struggle with depression and his decision to leave this world – a "choice" that continues to challenge those who loved him.

The glitz and glamour of the Academy Awards couldn't mask the absence King felt, as her son was once her steadfast companion at such star-studded events. But even in the shadow of sadness, she finds moments of joy, sharing that sometimes, "it'll trigger laughter," and at other times, "his absence is really loud."

As King steps back into the limelight with "Shirley," a biopic dedicated to her late son, she remains committed to honoring "Ian in the totality of who he is."
