Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro will be honoured at next year's SAG Awards for not only his achievement throughout his tremendous acting career but also his humanitarian efforts. The "SAG's highest honour is bestowed upon those who exemplify the "finest ideals of the acting profession,"" according to EW. Robert De Niro has had a career spanning over 54 years where he starred in legendary roles in iconic movies like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Jackie Brown, Meet the Parents, Cape Fear and Silver Linings Playbook. Not to mention he most recent success in the Joker (2019) and The Irishman.

 

Robert De Niro: Tribeca Film Festival

The 76-year-old actor has also made incredible humanitarian contributions throughout his lifetime. He founded the annual Tribeca Film Festival which was in an attempt to revive lower-Manhattan post 9/11. The Tribeca Film Institute also supports underserved filmmakers in their work.

Robert De Niro will be honoured at the 2019 SAG Awards

From the smoldering inferno of young Vito Corleone to the raging bull Jake Lamotta and everybody’s grandpa Ben Whittaker, he continues to touch our hearts and open our minds to new and exciting worlds of understanding and emotion. It is my great privilege to announce that SAG-AFTRA’s highest honor will be presented to one of the most singular talents of our generation, Robert De Niro," the SAG President Gabrielle Carteris announced on Tuesday November 12th.

The SAG Lifetime Achievement Award 

The SAG Life Achievement Award has been given to 55 other people throughout the union's history. Among those are Ernest Borgine (2010), Mary Tyler Moore (2011), Dick Van Dyke (2012), Lily Tomlin (2017), Morgan Freeman (2018) and Alan Alda earlier this year. The 2019 SAG Awards and 26th annual ceremony will air on Sunday January 19th and 8 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS.
