Salma Hayek has left everyone stunned with a new revelation: She nearly died of COVID-19 at the beginning of last year.

In a new Variety interview, the Mexican actress spoke about her experience and returning to acting after seven weeks at home recovering from the disease.

Salma Hayek nearly died of the coronavirus

Hayek revealed her private battle with COVID-19, which came during the early days of the pandemic in spring of 2020.

"My doctor begged me to go to the hospital because it was so bad," the 54-year-old star told Variety. "I said, 'No, thank you. I'd rather die at home,'" she added.

According to the outlet, Hayek spent the next seven weeks isolated in a room in the home she shares with her husband, François-Henri Pinault, and their 13-year-old daughter, Valentina.

Salma Hayek needed oxygen during COVID-19 battle

Hayek said that she was even put on oxygen when she was in the throes of COVID-19. She hasn't yet regained the strength she lost during her illness, but the coronavirus did not prevent her from returning to set.

After COVID-19, Hayek returned to shoot the crime film House of Gucci, which is coming out later this year. "It was easy. It was the perfect job to just get back into it," she said.

House of Gucci is Ridley Scott's new film, which features a cast including Hayek and other names like Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino and Jared Leto. It's set for a Nov. 24 premiere.
