Sunny Johnson became known to a wide audience primarily through her role in “Flashdance.” In the film, the actress played figure skater Jeanie Szabo, the best friend of Alex, the dancer portrayed by Jennifer Beals. On June 19, 1984, Sunny Johnson died at the age of 30 from a ruptured blood vessel in her brain.

According to UPI, her boyfriend, Archie Hahn, found her unconscious in the Los Angeles home where the two had been living for a year. Johnson was then taken to UCLA Medical Center. During transport, she had to be placed on a ventilator.

Her agent, Steve Dontanville, explained at the time that she had been kept on life support at the hospital for a few more days. After that, Sunny Johnson was declared clinically dead.

The agent also reported that the doctors had detected no further brain activity. “She had a flat brain wave on Tuesday,” Steve Dontanville said, according to UPI.

The family was told the following morning that, even if he were to emerge from the coma, he could no longer be expected to regain his mental faculties. The family then agreed to turn off the ventilator. The official cause of death was listed as a ruptured blood vessel in the brain—that is, an aneurysm.
