British actor Gary Oldman has weighed in on one of film’s most watched casting questions: who will play the next James Bond. While promoting current projects, the Oscar winner spoke about fellow actor Jack Lowden, his co-star on Apple’s Slow Horses, and suggested the decision may already be made behind the scenes. The remarks arrive as interest keeps building around the future of the spy franchise, with Amazon MGM Studios now steering the property and a new creative team already in place for the next chapter.
Gary Oldman Backs Jack Lowden for Bond
Oldman did not hide where his support lies. “It’s been rumored that [Lowden] is on the shortlist,” said Oldman according to Hollywood Reporter. “We’re going to find out pretty soon, aren’t we? Because they have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So my fingers are crossed for Jack.” The comment quickly added momentum to Lowden’s name, especially because Oldman framed the situation as if the studio has already settled on its next lead.
Jack Lowden Stays in a Crowded 007 Field
Lowden has been one of several actors linked to the role in recent months, but no official casting announcement has arrived. Other names floated in industry chatter include Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harris Dickinson. Even with that crowded field, Oldman’s endorsement carries weight. The two actors have worked closely together since 2022 on Slow Horses, giving Oldman a direct view of Lowden’s screen presence, discipline and ability to carry a major franchise part.
Denis Villeneuve and Steven Knight Shape New Film
The next Bond film is already taking form creatively. Director Denis Villeneuve is attached to helm the project, while screenwriter Steven Knight is writing the script. That pairing signals a serious, prestige-minded direction for the series as it enters a new era. As reported by Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM Studios took full control of the character and related intellectual property in February 2025 through a deal with longtime franchise stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Even so, the studio has not confirmed any actor for the lead role.
Saoirse Ronan Eyes a Bond Villain Role
Lowden’s household has another possible Bond connection. Actor Saoirse Ronan, his wife and the mother of his child, recently said she would gladly step into the franchise as an antagonist. While promoting Bad Apples to Empire, Ronan said, “I want to go dark.” She added, “I said that I wanted to be a Bond villain and I’m dead serious.” Her idea of a younger female villain adds another layer to the conversation around where the series could go next, especially if the filmmakers are aiming to refresh both hero and foe.
