Steve McQueen Set The Stage For All Future Leading Men
Unfortunately, Steve was diagnosed with a rare cancer called mesothelioma while filming The Hunter in 1979. It is a soft tissue tumor that can result from inhaling asbestos, a mineral. Steve is said to have been involved with it during his time in the US Navy. He served there from 1947 to 1950. His diagnosis said it was incurable, as his wife Barbara describes in the book The Last Mile.
