Bill Burr

While many may know Bill Burr as the hilarious creator for F Is For Family, this comedian has also been known to say some pretty offensive things.

In his 2019 Netflix special Paper Tiger, Burr left a bad taste in some mouths when he openly mocked the #MeToo movement and laughed that it went from "no one listening, to too much of an over-correction", before launching off into a rant asking what about the women "that like it rough".

Despite an audience member shutting down the joke and simply stating, "ask for consent", Burr was quick to shut this down as well, before going into another rant of people being "easily triggered", as if asking for consent is some outlandish proposition. He then went into a bit about how "women bullies" are hilarious to him, because how can they think that in the workplace they have standing over him, a man, before going off about male feminists.

Overall, the special made a lot of people frustrated at the obvious sexism that he tried to shluff off as comedy.

Michael Che

Michael Che has had a long career in comedy and is one of the more memorable recent SNL members. But that doesn't mean he's exempt from controversy.

Back in 2014, Che got some backlash after he shared a video of a woman walking around in New York in a day constantly getting catcalled. Che shared the video to his Twitter, and wrote at the time, "I'd like to apologize to all the women I've told to 'have a nice day', or 'you're beautiful,'" completely missing the point of the what the woman was trying to express.

Che also wrote a bit mocking Caitlyn Jenner after her transition calling her "a tranny", and making fun of the transgender experience, and has since rebuked using the word, although has still come under fire for other homophobic and transphobic rhetoric.

Sarah Silverman

Although Sarah Silverman may have calmed down a bit in terms of her comedy in recent years, that doesn't stop the fact she did some questionable sketches in the past.

The most notable was a sketch she did for a Comedy Central skit in which she donned blackface, questioning in the skit whether it was harder to be Black or Jewish in America. Since then she has revealed that she doesn't stand by it today, and that she is now "horrified" she ever did, but that she's learned and will do better.

Silverman also has been booed off stage before for racial comments, most notable being the time she said she was broken up with by her half-Black boyfriend because she was a loser, before jumping into, "I'm such a pessimist. He's half-white." Audience members did not appreciate the "joke", and when she went further to mock Martin Luther King Jr., people were not having it!

Using racial slurs, mocking the Holocaust, and joking about AIDS, it's no wonder why she said that she "cringes" when she thinks about the past sketches she's done.

Daniel Tosh

Daniel Tosh has always been known for saying outrageous and shocking things, but it was one stand up in particular that left a really bad taste in people's mouths.

During a 2012 stand up show, Tosh had an audience member call out during his performance, to which he responded how funny it would be if she got "gang raped right this second".

The Tosh.0 creator was left having to apologize for the disturbing comments, but his apology seemed lacklustre, and many boycotted the comedian.

George Carlin

The late comedian, George Carlin, oftentimes poked fun at religion, politics, and social justice. Despite sometimes offending audience members, Carlin never took life too seriously.

One of the most memorable George Carlin moments is when he joked about Osama Bin Laden farting, blowing up a plane, and called airport security a joke. Not only that, but he also titled his HBO special "I Kinda Like It When People Die" just days before 9/11 happened, and his special ended up getting shelved until 2016.

Being named one of the best comedians of our time, Carlin often surpasses being just "offensive" to straight-up hilarious, and perhaps is one of the only comedians on our list that while uses crude language, gets his audiences to really think about the more serious things in life from a different perspective.

Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler has come into the light in the last few years, but that doesn't erase her outrageous comments from her past. Following a messy performance by Amy Winehouse, Handler read a statement from the Serbian Defense Minister calling her performance a "shame and disappointment", to which Handler responded, "Well, so is your country."

Not only has she been on blast for some of her tweets, but her book Uganda Be Kidding Me caused a lot of backlash for its insensitive racial cover. She claimed that there was no way she was racist because she "dates lots of Black people", but many were not convinced she really understood why the cover and name were a little iffy.

Anthony Jeselnik

While most comedians shy away from really dark topics, Anthony Jeselnik isn't one of them. There are many jokes that have left audience members shifting in their seats. Joking about his racist father, pedophilia, and fat-shaming women, it seems there isn't a topic Jeselnik will stay away from.

Jeselnik came under fire for one special he did in which he joked, "You don’t know anything about pain until you’ve seen your own baby drowned in a tub... and you definitely don’t know anything about how to wash a baby." Following his stand-up with multiple baby jokes, fans were outraged.

His joke about how "Santa should be Black, so when children find out he's not real, they're not disappointed," caused an uproar with audiences, and forced Jeselnik to apologize for his comments, although many felt it wasn't authentic.

Seth McFarlane

It probably comes as no surprise the creator of Family Guy makes the list! Seth McFarlane not only has greatly offended people with certain Family Guy storylines, but his 2013 Oscar hosted night rubbed some the wrong way.

After jokingly praising women for undressing in certain movies, the comedian went on to sing a monologue in which he sang, "We saw your boobs." Many felt this was a sexist thing to do, especially since the actresses themselves were in the room getting called out, which made some very uncomfortable.

Not only did he make sexist remarks, but he also referenced singer Adele looked akin to a hippo, as well as joked about Chris Brown and Rihanna's domestic dispute that landed Rihanna in the hospital. The comments received a lot of hate, but despite this fact, McFarlane was still asked to come back to host in 2019, which he turned down.

Dave Chappelle

Dave Chappelle is a tricky comedian to critique! His Netflix special Sticks and Stones fell flat among the Rotten Tomatoes critics, giving him only a 35%, despite the audience score being 99%.

Most notably offensive in the special is his accusations towards the Finding Neverland victims, saying that he not only doesn't believe them but even if he did, Michael Jackson is still someone to hold in high regard because "half the people in the room have been molested, and it wasn't Michael Jackson."

The comments earned him some major backlash, but it didn't stop there. Chappelle was also criticized for his major anti-trans rhetoric, and openly declared he didn't care if people thought he was homophobic.

Jim Jefferies

Something that every comedian should shy away from is violent dialogue, but for Jim Jeffries, he doesn't seem to care. In his 2019 comedy stand-up show, Jeffries was crude and very vocal about his sexual fantasies, but it was the way he explained to them that left audiences shook.

Claiming that he would "love to be gay so he could punch his partner", he also went on to say that he loves sex so much he wishes he could "gouge out holes" anywhere on a woman that he wants. People were shocked at such a violent comment, and since then Jefferies has apologized for his blatant misogyny and sexism.

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein trial, Jefferies made it a point to address his own past sexist behaviour, saying that he's sorry he missed what happens to women right underneath men's noses, adding that he "thought I was a really good guy with all the not raping I've done", but that as it turns out "that's not enough."

Comedy isn't' always supposed to be squeaky clean, but some comedians take it a little too far for some! The most controversial comedians can be some of the funniest!

Comedians strive to entertain, but sometimes what they find funny can leave those watching uncomfortable, but at least they're memorable!

The most controversial comedians

Sometimes comedians remind us to take the hardest topics in life and learn to find the humour in them. Take George Carlin, for example. The late comedian often times poked fun at religion, politics, and social justice. Despite sometimes offending audience members, you can't help but laugh at the fact that he doesn't take anything too seriously!

Not only did Carlin joke about Osama Bin Laden and called airport security a joke, but he also titled his HBO special "I Kinda Like It When People Die" just days before 9/11 happened, and his special ended up getting shelved until 2016.

When comedians go too far

During a 2012 stand up show, Tosh had an audience member call out during his performance, to which he responded how funny it would be if she got "gang raped right this second".

The Tosh.0 creator was left having to apologize for the disturbing comments, but his apology seemed lackluster, and many boycotted the comedian.
