Euphoria director Sam Levinson has been involved in the entertainment industry since he was a child! His father, Barry Levinson, is also a filmmaker, actor, and writer - he directed the film Good Morning, Vietnam and Rain Man, to name a few! Needless to say, it's no wonder that his son, Sam, followed his father's footsteps...
This Is Euphoria Director Sam Levinson
Euphoria director Sam Levinson had his directorial debut for the 2011 comedy-drama Another Happy Day, in which he already received an award - the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award - at the Sundance Film Festival.
A few years later, Sam teamed up with his dad to work on the film The Wizard of Lies (2017), starring Robert DeNiro.
In 2018, he both wrote and directed the action thriller Assassination Nation, which included Suki Waterhouse, Bella Thorne, and Maude Apatow and received mixed reviews. Levinson has an upcoming film starring lovebirds Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck titled Deep Water, which is set to come out in 2021!
The reason he had an interest in the Israeli original series, Euphoria, is because Sam himself struggled with addiction growing up, as depicted with many of the characters in the show. Before the premiere of the HBO show, Sam shared his emotional story with audience members at the ArcLight Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, stating:
"I spent the majority of my teenage years in hospitals, rehabs and halfway houses. Sometime around the age of 16, I resigned myself to the idea that eventually drugs would kill me and there was no reason to fight it. I would let it take me over, and I had made peace with that."
In his personal life, Sam is married to Ashley Lent, and the pair have a son together.
His other partner-in-crime is Emmy-award winning Zendaya, who just won an Emmy award for her Lead Actress role in Euphoria! Sam and Zendaya will work together again in the upcoming drama Malcolm & Marie.
