Tom Selleck has been a household name ever since he claimed the title role as "Thomas Magnum" in the 1980s crime series, Magnum, P.I. But he's always made sure to find the balance between family life and fame.

In a new People magazine interview, Selleck, now 75-years-old, talked family and how he's gone about a career in the spotlight.

"I'm a fairly private person," he began. "And I’ve always treasured the balance between work and time with my family. It’s always about them."

"My relationships and my ranch keep me sane," Selleck added. He's currently married to his wife of 33 years, Jillie Mack, with whom he has one daughter, Hannah, 31. The Blue Bloods star also has a son, Kevin, 54, with his first wife, Jacqueline.

He went on to describe his 63-acre ranch in Ventura, California. There, he says, "I do grunt work and I make the rounds. I like watching things grow. It's a retreat."

The veteran actor with a famous moustache also reflected on stardom.

"I knew intellectually what it would mean in terms of being a public person, but until you've lived it, there's no way to understand it," he said. "I had a feeling of, 'I don't think I'm cut out for this.'"

He went on to reveal why he left his role as "Thomas Magnum" in 1988. "I quit Magnum, not because I didn’t like it or I was tired of it," he explained. "I was tired from it. And I wanted a three-dimensional life because I didn’t have one."

The decision led to something of a hiatus from acting for Selleck in the early '90s. But he later returned - on his own terms, with roles on shows including Friends and The Closer.

Today, Selleck plays "Frank Reagan" on Blue Bloods, a role he's filled since 2010. Selleck has no regrets about how he's handled his career, either.

"I'm proud of my work, I still love what I do, and I have my family," he said. "I've been enormously fortunate."
