• Steve Perry is a musical icon
  • He is best known for the band Journey
  • Steve hits a major milestone today

And guess what? Steve is turning 75 today. What a life he has had! His journey began in the small town of Hanford, California, where he was born to Portuguese parents. Little did the world know that this only child, who found solace in music after his parents' separation, would become a rock legend.

The Golden Note of Destiny

On his 12th birthday, Perry received a gold eighth-note pendant from his mother, a symbol of luck that would accompany him on his path to stardom.

Inspired by the soulful sounds of Sam Cooke, Perry set his sights on becoming a singer, a dream that would take him from the disbanded Ice to the progressive rock band Pieces, and eventually to the front of the stage with Journey.

Perry's entry into Journey was nothing short of a cinematic twist. Initially introduced as a "roadie's Portuguese cousin" to avoid ruffling feathers, Perry's impromptu performance during a sound check in Long Beach catapulted him to the role of lead singer. His unique pop-rock infusion won over fans, and with hits like "Lights" and "Open Arms," Perry's voice became synonymous with the band's success.

But Perry wasn't just a one-band wonder. His solo career flourished with the release of "Street Talk," featuring the chart-topping "Oh Sherrie," a tribute to his then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford. His voice graced the all-star benefit song "We Are the World" and even ventured into film soundtracks.

A series of unfortunate events compelled him to leave Journey unofficially in 1986. Thereafter, he took a seven-year break from the music industry. He reunited with the band in 1996, for the reunion album, 'Trial by Fire', which was a huge success, making its way into the third position on the Billboard chart.

However, due to a hip injury, he couldn’t continue further with the band. Then in 1998, he released “Greatest Hits + 5 Unreleased”, a solo compilation album that included an original 'Alien Project' demo. In 2005, he did many background vocals and covers along with ‘Ambrosia’s lead vocalist, David Pack.

Trials, Tribulations, and Triumphs

Life wasn't always a smooth ride for Perry. The relationship between him and his girlfriend Sherri Swafford didn’t work out and caused him much heartache. His breakup pain is apparent in many of his musical compositions.

His mother Mary was diagnosed with a serious neurological illness which resulted in her death on December 4, 1985. Her untimely death affected him and his career profoundly.

Personal losses and health issues led to hiatuses from music, but like a true rock phoenix, he rose again with the release of "Traces" in 2018 and a Christmas album, 'The Season,' in 2021.

His recent collaboration with Dolly Parton on her rock album 'Rockstar' shows that Perry's voice is a timeless treasure in the music industry.

Dubbed "The Voice" by none other than Jon Bon Jovi, Perry's countertenor range has drawn comparisons to greats like Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin. His accolades include a spot in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Journey.

Perry's journey from a small-town boy with a golden pendant to a rock legend is a testament to the power of perseverance and the magic of music. His voice has journeyed through rock history, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans worldwide.

Now at 75, we can't wait to see if Steve has any more big numbers up his sleeve.
