Who is Wallace Shawn? While you may recognize him from a variety of roles there is more to Wallace Shawn than meets the eye. Born November 12, 1943, Wallace Shawn had ambitions to become a diplomat before turning to acting full-time.

Graduating with a bachelor's in history, Wallace spent time studying philosophy, politics, and economics at the University of Oxford as well as teaching English in India! After moving back stateside, Wallace would teach Latin in NYC until 1979 when he would pursue acting full-time!

Wallace Shawn’s first roles would come in plays, many of which he also wrote like:

  • Our Late Night (1974)
  • Marie and Bruce (1978)
  • Aunt Dan and Lemon (1985)
  • The Designated Mourner (1997)

Wallace would make his film debut with Woody Allen’s Manhattan in 1979 alongside Diane Keaton. From there, the talented actor would prove to be unstoppable and has now starred in a number of classics like Clueless (1995), Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz (1979), and The Princess Bride (1987).

Wallace Shawn has also seen success on TV, having starred in a number of smaller but regular roles in series including:

  • “Cyrus Rose” on Gossip Girl
  • “Grand Nagus Zek” on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  • “Jeff Engels” on The Cosby Show
  • “Charles Lester” on The Good Wife
  • and most recently as “Dr. John Sturgis” on Young Sheldon.

Wallace is also known for his voice work, most notably as “Rex” in the Toy Story films! At 80 years old, Wallace Shawn has quite an impressive resume under his belt and is one of the most recognizable faces in the acting world!
