He’s 62 Today: ’80s Heartthrob Rob Lowe Is Almost Unrecognizable

At the age of twelve, in 1976, Robert Hepler Lowe landed his first stage role as an errand boy in a Sherlock Holmes production at Wright State University in Dayton. He was paid $150 for his performance—a modest start for a future global star. Even as a child, he would call theater companies one after another in hopes of landing a children’s role.

Rob Lowe’s real breakthrough came in 1983 when he played Sodapop Curtis in Francis Ford Coppola’s film adaptation of “The Outsiders,” alongside Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, and Patrick Swayze.
