He’s 81 Today: Tom Selleck Is Unrecognizable 38 Years After 'Magnum, P.I'

Tom Selleck earned his first money as a commercial model for brands such as Pepsi and Right Guard. Tall and well-built, he quickly caught the attention of photographers. At that time, the young Selleck was still a long way from Hollywood fame.

The U.S. soap opera 'The Young and the Restless' gave him his first regular television role as Jed Andrews, starting in 1974. His fame remained modest at first, but his rise to stardom had begun.

Director Steven Spielberg originally wanted to cast him in the role of Indiana Jones, but a contract with CBS prevented him from moving to Paramount. Instead, Tom Selleck stayed on with the new crime series 'Magnum, P.I.' That decision would have a major impact on his career.

As private investigator Thomas Magnum, he captivated living rooms around the world with his Hawaiian shirt, red Ferrari, and thick mustache. He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role. The look from that era is still considered his most iconic appearance to this day.

In addition to 'Magnum, P.I.', Tom Selleck also appeared in several feature films, including 'Three Men and a Baby.' In the 1990 action film 'Quigley on the Plain', Tom Selleck finally played an American sniper in the Australian outback, showing a rougher side of himself. The film cemented his image as a versatile screen hero beyond the realm of television series.

In the hit series 'Friends,' Tom Selleck played Monica Geller’s older partner and earned an Emmy nomination for the role. The role introduced him to a new, younger generation of viewers. His mustache remained just as prominent as it had been in his earlier roles.

With the 'Jesse Stone' TV movies, featuring the melancholic police chief of the same name, Tom Selleck once again found a role to which he remained loyal for years. A total of nine films in the series were made by 2015.

For fourteen seasons starting in 2010, Tom Selleck played Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, the head of a New York City police family, on 'Blue Bloods.' The series ran until 2024 and once again made him one of America’s most recognizable TV personalities. He thus left his 'Magnum, P. I.' image—complete with the Hawaiian shirt—further behind him.

Since the end of 'Blue Bloods,' the actor has largely stepped out of the spotlight and devoted himself to his avocado farm in California and to his wife, Jillie Mack, whom he has been married to since 1987. His once-dark beard is now gray-white, just like his hair. Most recently, Tom Selleck provided the narration for the 2026 documentary 'Revolutionary America.'
