After graduating from Winter Park High School, Amanda Bearse moved to Atlanta with her family. She furthered her acting training at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York under the guidance of Sanford Meisner. Those years laid the foundation for her future career both in front of and behind the camera.

Bearse played her first recurring role as Amanda Cousins on the soap opera “All My Children,” a role she portrayed until 1983. Her entry into the world of television series opened the door to film and other television projects. Shortly thereafter, she landed smaller film roles, such as in the comedy “Protocol” alongside Goldie Hawn.

In “Fright Night,” Bearse played the female lead, Amy Peterson, and thus established herself in the horror genre. The film is still considered one of the defining contributions to the genre in the 1980s. Prior to that, she had already appeared in the comedy “Fraternity Vacation” as Nicole Ferret.

As Jean Haywood, Bearse appeared in an episode of the drama series “Hotel”—a brief but notable stepping stone before her most famous role. Such guest appearances kept her in the public eye while larger projects were already in the works.

As Marcy Rhoades, later Marcy D'Arcy, Bearse became a regular cast member of the sitcom 'Married... with Children' alongside Ed O'Neill and Katey Sagal. The series ran until 1997 and, with 259 episodes, is one of the longest-running sitcoms in U.S. television history. The role of the independent-minded neighbor brought Bearse international fame.

While playing the role of Marcy, Bearse began directing and helmed a total of 31 episodes of “Married… with Children” between 1991 and 1997. Having studied at the American Film Institute and the University of Southern California, she laid the groundwork for a second career. This move behind the camera would shape her professional life in the decades to come.

At the height of the series' success, Bearse came out as gay, becoming one of the first openly lesbian stars on mainstream American television. This move came at a time when open declarations of homosexuality were still rare in Hollywood. Since then, she has remained open with the public about her personal life, including as the mother of her daughter Zoe.

After “Married… with Children” ended in 1997, Bearse directed numerous other series, including “Dharma & Greg,” “Reba,” and “The Jamie Foxx Show.” In 2006, she teamed up with Rosie O’Donnell to produce and direct “The Big Gay Sketch Show,” thereby definitively expanding her career from acting to producing and directing.

After spending years primarily behind the camera, Bearse took on the role of Judge Jodi Corliss in two episodes of the series “Drop Dead Diva” in 2011. Her brief appearance showed that she remained committed to acting despite her career as a director. That same year, she also directed an episode of the Disney series “Jessie.”

In 2020, Bearse returned to the screen for the first time in 25 years to star in the German horror comedy “Sky Sharks.” In 2022, she played the mother of Luke Macfarlane’s character in the romantic comedy “Bros,” and in 2024, she appeared as Ramona Skoog in the film “Tapawingo.” Today, in 2026, Bearse is primarily regarded as an experienced director whose transition from sitcom star to sought-after television producer has made her one of the most influential women behind the scenes in the U.S. comedy scene. With her short gray hair and glasses, we would have barely recognized her.

Amanda Bearse became a familiar face on American television in the 1980s and 1990s, best known for playing Marcy Rhoades D’Arcy on the hit sitcom 'Married... with Children.' Her role made her a recognizable figure in one of the era’s most popular TV comedies.

From Sitcom Star to Acclaimed TV Director

Bearse’s career, however, extended far beyond her iconic role as Marcy. Over the years, she moved behind the camera and established herself as a sought-after television director.

In 2026, Amanda Bearse looks very different from her 'Married... with Children' days. We take a look back at her career, her work behind the camera, and how she has changed over the years.
