Toto's "Africa" was originally released in Europe on May 10, 1982, which means the song is celebrating its 38th anniversary today! When it comes to music, some might argue the 1990's was one of the best decades; while others believe funk and disco tracks released in the 1970's are the greatest, but we all have to agree on the fact that 1980's songs are THE songs!

Los Angeles based rock band Toto was formed in the late 1970's. While Bobby Kimball, David Paich and co. have released over 10 studio albums and big hits like "Hold the Line," "Rosanna," and "I'll Be Over You," the band's most successful track is undoubtedly "Africa".

This is why we LOVE "Africa" by Toto

  • Most people think it is a love song, but Toto's co-founder David Paich explained it actually makes reference to a man's love for a continent - which we can allrelate to! We all have a favourite continent and/or country!
  • The song implies that it is okay to be passionate about something you don't know first hand. According to Rolling Stone, Toto's drummer, Jeff Porcaro said: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV."
  • Apart from being able to listen to "Africa" whenever we want, the song has appeared in numerous TV shows including Chuck, Family Guy, and even Stranger Things.

  • People from all ages can enjoy the song! It is true that "Africa" makes some people recall the golden age of synth music in the 80's, but for some reason, younger music enthusiasts find synthesizers quite appealing...
  • Last but not least: the music video shows us what the fashion trends of that amazing decade looked like! Need we say more?
