At just 18 years old, Ralph Macchio landed his first television role as Jeremy Andretti in the final season of “Eight Is Enough.” A talent scout had already discovered him at age 16, after he had been learning tap dancing since he was three. His boyish looks, which would stay with him for decades and land him increasingly younger roles, were already noticeable back then.

Francis Ford Coppola cast the then 20-year-old as 16-year-old Johnny Cade in the film “The Outsiders,” even though Macchio was significantly older than his character. The cast included, among others, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Patrick Swayze. The film paved the way for his most famous role.

In “The Karate Kid II,” he continued the story of Daniel LaRusso, while at the same time shining as music student Eugene Martone in the musical drama “Crossroads.” He also appeared on Broadway alongside Robert De Niro in *Cuba and His Teddy Bear*. This versatility showed that he wanted to be more than just the Karate Kid.

With "The Karate Kid III," Macchio wrapped up the original film series and remained true to the character of Daniel LaRusso throughout three feature films. The trilogy had definitively established him as an icon of 1980s coming-of-age cinema. Physically, the teenager had by then become a young man in his late twenties.

Alongside Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei, Ralph Macchio starred in the 1992 film *My Cousin Winnie* as Billy Gambini, a man wrongly suspected of murder in a small town in Alabama. The comedy proved that Macchio could also deliver a compelling performance outside the karate genre. It was one of the last major box-office hits before a quieter phase in his career.

After guest appearances in shows like “Ugly Betty” as politician Archie Rodriguez and the viral Funny or Die sketch “Wax On, Fck Off,” he took to the dance floor in front of a wide audience. On “Dancing with the Stars,” he reached the semifinals and ultimately finished in fourth place. The show reminded a new generation of who the real Karate Kid had been.
