Heartbreaking Losses: These Beloved '80s Figures Are Already Gone

80s favorites like Patrick Swayze, Bonnie Tyler, and Silvia Seidel won over fans with their movies, TV shows, and songs. But sadly, we’ve already had to say goodbye to them and other 80s stars. These losses hit us especially hard.

With songs like “Rock Me Amadeus” and “Der Kommissar,” the Viennese musician Falco became an internationally celebrated star in the 1980s. In 1998, he was killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic; an autopsy revealed a high blood alcohol level as well as traces of cocaine. Falco was 41 years old.

As the lead singer of Wham! and with the global hit “Last Christmas,” George Michael had a decisive influence on the sound of the 1980s. On December 25, 2016, he was found unresponsive at his home in Oxfordshire by his partner, Fadi Fawaz. According to his management, he died of heart failure; an autopsy also revealed dilated cardiomyopathy. George Michael was 53 years old.

With her unmistakable voice, Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler became world-famous in the 1980s thanks to the global hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” After suffering a perforated bowel and undergoing emergency surgery, she was in a coma for several weeks before she died on July 8, 2026, in a hospital in Portugal from the illness for which she had been receiving treatment, her family said. Bonnie Tyler was 75 years old.

With his album “Thriller” and his signature dance moves, Michael Jackson redefined pop music in the 1980s and became the King of Pop. On June 25, 2009, he died of an overdose; his doctor, Conrad Murray, was held responsible and was later convicted by a court. Michael Jackson was 50 years old.

Even as a teenager, River Phoenix captivated audiences in films like 'Stand by Me' and was one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young actors in the 1980s. On the night of October 31, 1993, he collapsed outside Johnny Depp’s Viper Room club in West Hollywood and was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Cedars-Sinai Hospital; the cause of death was determined to be acute multiple drug intoxication following an overdose of heroin and cocaine. River Phoenix was only 23 years old.

With 'Dirty Dancing' in 1987, Patrick Swayze became an icon of dance films and rose to become one of the greatest movie stars of his time. After a two-year public battle with pancreatic cancer, he died on September 14, 2009, in Los Angeles. Patrick Swayze was 57 years old.

With her album “Private Dancer” and the hit “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” Tina Turner enjoyed incredible success in the 1980s. On May 24, 2023, she died of natural causes in Switzerland, as a spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Mail; she had previously survived, among other things, a stroke and a kidney transplant performed by her husband, Erwin Bach. Tina Turner was 83 years old.
