It was perhaps the biggest disaster the world has seen in a long time. A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck at 4:53 p.m. local time, devastating the small Caribbean island nation. It was the strongest quake to strike the region in more than 200 years. More than 200,000 people were killed.
The quake to end them all
By 24 January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake.
