The Royal Family has been following particular rules and traditions for a very long time. However, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan chose to step down as senior royals and pursue their own ambitions.
One of the first examples of this was at the wedding. Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan exchanged the rings during the ceremony.

Also, the wedding itself would not have been possible a few decades ago. Duchess Meghan was previously married and divorced from her former husband. In the British Royal Family, weddings after a divorce have only recently become acceptable.
In 2019, Meghan and Prince Harry surprised many with the decision not to spend Christmas with the Royal Family. Instead, they celebrated in Canada together with Meghan's mother.
