On Monday, the royals gathered in London to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Commemorated every year on May 8, VE Day commemorates the surrender of Germany in 1945 and the end of the Second World War. Throughout the week, events will take place across the UK as part of the celebrations.

Princess Kate beams at royal appearance

These began for the British royal family on May 5 with an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Princess Kate was the center of attention as she arrived in a burgundy ensemble with her husband, Prince William, and their children. The royal family, led by King Charles and Queen Camilla, made an appearance at the parade and air show.

While the other royals opted for dark looks and blue clothing, Kate clearly stood out with her dress. More than a year after her cancer diagnosis, the princess looked as strong as ever. Kate wore a hat with her coat dress and left her hair half down. What was particularly striking was that while Kate and daughter Charlotte often wear a matching look, this time William's wife was the only one in purple.

First big VE Day without the Queen

These commemorations mark the first major VE Day commemoration without the late Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen had a personal connection to these historic celebrations - as a young princess, she secretly joined the cheering crowds outside Buckingham Palace on the night of May 8, 1945. She also served in the war herself, training as a mechanic.
