Caroline of Monaco seemed to have found true love in the Italian Stefano Casiraghi. They married in 1983, had their son Andrea a year later and crowned their love in 1986 and 1987 with their children Charlotte and Pierre.

In 1990, however, Stefano was suddenly torn from life at the age of 30: He died in a terrible accident.

Caroline of Monaco: Her husband died in a serious accident

Stefano Casiraghi was a keen sailor. When he tried to defend his world championship title in an offshore race on the coast of Monaco in 1990, his passion proved to be his undoing.

Caroline of Monaco's husband's boat capsized in heavy seas. He broke his neck, but was taken to the hospital alive by rescue workers. In the end, however, he succumbed to his injuries.

Just a few weeks earlier, he narrowly escaped death when his boat exploded. Unfortunately, things didn't go so smoothly on October 3. All the more tragic: when the fatal accident happened, Caroline was in Paris.

Stefano Casiraghi was buried in the Chapelle de la Paix on October 6. For Caroline and her children, it was a loss that has stayed with them to this day. Daughter Charlotte wrote about her father's death in the magazine "Les Inrockuptibles" in 2022.

"A child who loses a parent at a very young age, at a time when the memory is not yet solidified, is left with a great injury that must not be trivialized" says Charlotte. She was just four years old at the time of the accident.

Caroline's marriage to Stefano Casiraghi was her second. In 1978, she married the financial broker Philippe Junot - followed by a divorce two years later. After the death of her second husband, she married Ernst August von Hannover in 1999 and their daughter Alexandra was born in the same year.
