King Charles' meeting with Prince Harry, Duchess Meghan, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, has sparked fresh debate across the United Kingdom. While the monarch welcomed his family to Highgrove House, the relationship between William and his younger brother remains deeply strained.
Although the future king is said to understand why his father wanted the reunion, he reportedly has no intention of taking a similar step toward Harry. That difference highlights just how differently Charles and William view the ongoing family rift within the monarchy.
Prince William Understands Charles, but Draws a Clear Line
According to Page Six, royal expert Kinsey Schofield believes William can likely understand his father's decision. Given Charles's battle with cancer, she says it's natural that a father would want to see his son and grandchildren.
For William, however, the issue goes far beyond a family reunion. Schofield explained: “Prince William probably understands why his father did it, even if he wouldn't have done it himself.” Her comments suggest that compassion and caution continue to exist side by side.
Trust Remains the Biggest Obstacle
Schofield was even more direct when discussing why the brothers have still not reconciled.
“In his mind, the issue has never been whether Harry is family; it’s whether Harry can be trusted,” she said, according to Page Six.
That, she argues, remains William’s top priority: protecting the monarchy he is one day expected to lead. A single meeting at Highgrove has done little to change that. Schofield added that while Charles may be thinking about his personal legacy, William is focused on the long-term stability of the Crown.
A Private Reunion at Highgrove
On Friday, Buckingham Palace confirmed the private family gathering at Highgrove House. Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by Harry, Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet. It marked the King's first reunion with his youngest grandchildren in four years. No photographs from the meeting were released.
Harry had initially traveled to the United Kingdom alone after losing his government-funded security protection. Meghan and the children arrived later, but the family made no public appearances during the visit.
Separate Engagements Reflect the Ongoing Rift
The distance between the brothers was once again evident during their stay in Britain. On the same day, William and Harry carried out separate engagements just a few miles apart. William visited the London Welsh School, while Harry attended an Invictus Games Foundation event at Chatham House.
The conflict between the brothers has simmered for years and intensified further after Harry published his memoir, Reserve. In the book, he claimed that William had described Meghan as “difficult,” “rude,” and “harsh,” and alleged that an argument between the brothers turned physical, with William knocking him to the floor.
