Prince Harry has returned to the United Kingdom with Duchess Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet, but his newfound proximity to his homeland apparently does not change his role within the monarchy. The Duke of Sussex is reportedly not expected to attend one of the most significant royal events of the year: Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph.
For Harry, who served in the armed forces for ten years and completed two deployments to Afghanistan, this is a particularly sensitive issue. Nevertheless, he appears to have accepted that he will not be participating in the commemorations in an official capacity.
Prince Harry Is Absent From the Cenotaph Commemoration
According to the British Express, Harry, as a non-working member of the royal family, is not expected to attend official state events. This includes the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph in November. Instead, he is expected to observe the occasion privately, partly because of the logistical and security challenges surrounding his participation.
An insider quoted by i Paper put it this way: “Would he like to attend the Cenotaph? Would he like to pay his respects in the proper way that people do on Remembrance Sunday and on Armistice Day? Of course he would.”
Harry’s Return to the UK Is as a Private Family
Harry, Meghan, and their two children arrived from California a few days ago on a private jet, landing at Birmingham Airport. The family is now reportedly preparing to spend an extended period in the United Kingdom, with the Cotswolds being mentioned as a possible place of residence.
There are already plans in place for Archie and Lilibet as well: Both children are expected to attend British schools starting in September. The Sussexes have not yet publicly commented on the significant change of direction, despite the worldwide attention surrounding their departure from royal duties six years ago.
King Charles Draws a Clear Line
The family’s return apparently does not signal a return to official royal duties. While King Charles is reportedly willing to spend more time with Harry and Meghan, he is also said to be making clear that neither of them will become working royals again.
According to reports, the monarch learned about their plans to relocate only three days before they were made public. This has reinforced the reported palace position: family ties may be maintained, but a return to official royal duties is not currently on the table.
This is also why Harry’s participation in official state ceremonies remains unlikely.
Prince William Has Not Responded Publicly
The situation is further complicated by the continuing tension within the family. Harry’s relationship with Prince William is reportedly still strained. When the Sussexes returned to the United Kingdom, William was staying at Balmoral with King Charles. So far, there has been no public reaction from the heir to the throne.
Tensions between the brothers have escalated in recent years, partly because of criticism of the royal family from Harry and Meghan in interviews, their Netflix documentary, and Harry’s autobiography. Against that backdrop, his absence from official commemorative events may feel particularly significant.
