Crown Princess Amalia has taken another step in her military career. The 22-year-old was promoted to the rank of sergeant on October 17 during a ceremony aboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl in the port of Den Helder. For the Dutch heir to the throne, however, the occasion came with an unexpected surprise.
After receiving her new rank insignia, Amalia had a bucket of seawater poured over her head as part of a longstanding naval tradition. Photos released by the royal family show the princess wearing a blue patterned naval uniform and a beret, with crew members standing at attention on deck.
Princess Amalia Gets Soaked During Naval Tradition
The promotion took place during a ceremony known as "Alle hens," which brings together the ship's entire crew. As part of the tradition, newly awarded rank insignia are doused with seawater. Amalia appeared to take the unexpected shower in stride, smiling in the photos released afterward.
The princess had already spent a week at sea alongside first-year naval cadets aboard the Norwegian three-masted sailing ship. Built in 1914, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl continues to serve as a training vessel.
Princess Amalia Has Been Participating in Defensity College Since 2025
Since 2025, Amalia has been participating in the Defensity College program alongside her studies. The initiative allows university students to gain practical military experience while rotating through various positions within the armed forces. Its goal is to strengthen the connection between society and the military.
The heir to the throne initially worked with the Defense Staff and the Air Force before joining the Navy in September. Her week-long voyage aboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl was therefore part of her ongoing naval training.
Princess Amalia Chooses Not to Accept Payment
According to the Royal House, students participating in the program receive approximately €16.50 per hour for their work. However, Amalia has chosen not to accept this compensation.
Throughout her training, the princess has gained hands-on experience in military operations and exercises. During her time aboard the sailing ship, her duties included standing watch, taking part in maneuvers, and working alongside the crew on deck.
Following in Her Father's Footsteps
Crown Princess Amalia is also continuing a family tradition. Her father, King Willem-Alexander, completed his military service in the Navy before going on to serve in the Army and Air Force.
