Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been admitted to Rigshospitalet after concerns linked to her heart health. According to People, the Danish Royal House said the 86-year-old former monarch will remain in the hospital through the weekend for observation and further examinations. The palace also shared a brief update on her condition, saying, "Her Majesty is tired but in good spirits," according to People. The news puts fresh attention on the former sovereign, who stepped down from the throne in January 2024 after more than five decades as Denmark’s monarch.

Queen Margrethe Abdicated in January 2024

Her decision to leave the throne marked a major moment in Danish royal history. Queen Margrethe became the first Danish sovereign in nearly 900 years to voluntarily abdicate, handing the crown to her eldest son, King Frederik. His wife, Queen Mary, took on her new title at the same time, while Margrethe kept her own queenly style as Her Majesty. The move came on the 52nd anniversary of her accession, giving the transition both symbolic weight and a deeply personal dimension for the royal family.

Back Surgery Played a Role in Her Decision

Health had already entered the public conversation before she stepped aside. In her New Year’s Eve 2023 address, Queen Margrethe explained why the timing felt right after a major medical procedure. "In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me," she said according to People. She added that the operation led her to reflect on the future and whether it was time to pass responsibility to the next generation.

Queen Margrethe Faced Other Health Setbacks

Even after leaving the throne, the former queen continued to carry out public duties. But the past year brought several interruptions. She was hospitalized after a fall and later admitted again when she came down with a cold, forcing changes to planned appearances. Those episodes, along with the latest hospital stay, have kept attention on her wellbeing as she continues to hold a visible place in Denmark’s royal life. Despite no longer serving as reigning monarch, she remains a central figure in the family and in public ceremonial life.

Prince Joachim Title Dispute Still Shapes the Family

The latest health update also arrives after a turbulent stretch for the Danish royal household. Before stepping down, Queen Margrethe made another major decision when she removed royal titles from the four children of her younger son, Prince Joachim. The change meant they would no longer be prince or princess, though they stayed in the line of succession. Margrethe later said the step was meant to future-proof the monarchy and give her grandchildren more freedom to shape their own lives outside the formal demands of the royal house.
