- Inside the deepening divide between the royal brothers
- Princess Kate’s quiet role in a family fracture
- New claims about William, Harry and the breaking point
A new tell-all book about Prince William and Princess Kate is once again stirring debate within the British royal family. In 'William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story,' royal expert Russell Myers explores just how deep the rift between William and his younger brother, Prince Harry, truly runs.
The first excerpts, published in the Mirror in March, portray an heir to the throne mourning the loss of his once-close relationship with his brother — and a wife who has increasingly become a silent observer of a family drama she can no longer influence.
William mourns the loss of closeness to Harry
According to Myers, Prince William was “deeply saddened” by Harry’s decision to step back from royal duties. “He and Harry had been drifting apart for years, but now he knew deep down that there would be no turning back,” the author writes.
The brothers shared a powerful bond shaped by their childhood, the early death of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and growing up in the public eye. However, that former unity has since been severely damaged. Particularly painful, according to the report, is the fact that William and Harry have not spoken in person since the funeral of Elizabeth II in 2022.

Kate as an “outsider” in the brothers’ conflict
Myers describes Princess Kate as something of an “outsider”, watching the gradual breakdown of the relationship between William and Harry at close quarters. Initially, the Princess of Wales attempted to mediate and bring the brothers closer together. Over time, however, she reportedly realised that her influence was limited.
Ultimately, she accepted that there was little more she could do to reconcile them — a realisation that came as tensions within the family continued to intensify.
Kate’s view of Harry and Meghan
The book also touches on Kate’s alleged perspective on Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. According to the author, she believed the couple had an “agenda” that no longer aligned with the values she and William sought to uphold following their wedding in 2011.
Their approach was said to have become increasingly difficult and to have moved away from more traditional expectations within the royal family. Kate is also described as having sensed a growing frustration on the couple’s part — particularly regarding royal protocol and the monarchy’s strict hierarchy.
A conflict with no clear resolution
At the heart of the book lies the long-standing dynamic between heir and “spare”. Kate is said to have believed that this very structure ultimately made Harry’s departure inevitable. As Myers summarises, Harry “more from his role than being a bit-part player."
Initially, Kate reportedly supported Meghan, helping her settle into palace life and hoping to integrate her fully into the family. However, escalating media scrutiny and widening differences deepened the divide. The eventual move to California marked a turning point — and a family estrangement that, according to the book, continues to this day.
