Charles and Camilla's story began decades ago

King Charles and Camilla met at a polo match in the early 1970s. The two had a brief relationship, but it did not last long. In 1973, Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles, an army officer.

A harsh setback for the then Prince Charles, who still had feelings for his ex. Years later, on July 29th 1981, he married Lady Diana Spencer. But the marriage was not destined to last. In the mid-1980s, Diana and Charles were in the midst of a serious crisis.

The British king kept seeing his ex - and Diana knew about it! Camilla Parker Bowles was subsequently ripped apart by the British press.

The affair that ended two marriages, and caused one

The affair did the rest: in 1992 Charles and Lady Diana announced their separation. In 1994, Charles admitted in a TV interview that he had been unfaithful to Diana. Two years later, the two were officially divorced.

In 1995, Camilla also divorced her husband and withdrew from the public eye for a few years. It was not until four years later, in 1999, that King Charles and Camilla appeared together at a birthday party, making the relationship public.

Then, in 2002, Camilla attended an official royal event for the first time.

Since then, the two have been able to live out their happy love life in public. In February 2004, the British Palace announced the marriage of the then-heir to the throne to Camilla. On April 8th, 2005, the two said "I do".

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth announced Camilla would hold the title of Queen Consort after her passing.

After the Queen's death a little later in September, Prince Charles became King - and his Camilla became the Queen of Great Britain. Who could have guessed this outcome back then?

Camilla has thus achieved the impossible - the royal family has accepted her after all these years. Now that sounds like a happy ending!
