Charles III has offered a rare personal glimpse into his ongoing cancer treatment during a visit to Guy’s Cancer Centre in London. The 77-year-old monarch met with patients, doctors and researchers as the hospital celebrated its 300th anniversary.

During one particularly candid exchange, Charles spoke openly with a patient undergoing chemotherapy, revealing a side effect he knows all too well himself. Since announcing his cancer diagnosis in 2024, Buckingham Palace has shared very few personal details about the King’s condition, making the moment especially striking.

King Charles Opens Up About a Difficult Side Effect

While speaking with patient Raymond Burgess, the conversation turned to one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment: a persistent metallic taste.

Burgess explained that chemotherapy had left him with a constant unpleasant taste in his mouth. Charles immediately responded with empathy, making it clear he had experienced something similar himself.

“It's an awful sort of metallic taste. It doesn't exactly help with eating,” the King reportedly said.

The brief comment stood out because Charles rarely discusses the physical effects of his treatment publicly. The exchange offered a more human and personal side of the monarch, who appeared deeply engaged with the experiences of other patients.

Visit Focused on Cancer Research and Innovation

The royal visit also highlighted major advances in cancer care and research. During his time at Guy’s Cancer Centre and King's College London, Charles learned more about emerging medical technologies, including the use of artificial intelligence and robotics in patient treatment.

The King spent time speaking with researchers and healthcare professionals about how these innovations could improve diagnosis, treatment and long-term care for cancer patients in the future.

Charles Previously Shared Positive Health Update

At the end of last year, Charles had already spoken briefly about his progress in a pre-recorded message.

“Today, I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders,’ my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year,” the King reportedly said at the time.

He described the development as both a personal blessing and a reflection of how far modern cancer treatment has advanced.

Buckingham Palace Says Recovery Is Progressing Well

The exact form of cancer affecting the King has never been publicly disclosed. However, Buckingham Palace has recently described his response to treatment as very encouraging.

According to royal aides, Charles has responded exceptionally well, with his medical care now moving into what has been described as a precautionary and monitoring phase.

Even so, his health continues to be closely observed as he gradually resumes more public duties. His willingness to share such a specific and personal detail during the clinic visit showed not only the seriousness of his own experience, but also how strongly he connects with others facing similar battles.
