Traditional Maundy Thursday Rituals

This tradition, rooted in history, sees the number of recipients correspond to the monarch's age. This year, King Charles presented the coins to 77 men and 77 women. The recipients receive two leather pouches: one containing ordinary coinage symbolizing the Sovereign's gift for essentials and the other with Maundy coins matching the Sovereign's age. These coins are legal tender but are often kept as mementos. In 2022, Charles performed this service for the first time, substituting for Queen Elizabeth, and in 2024, Queen Camilla filled in for Charles due to his cancer treatment.
