Prince Frederik of Luxembourg passed away in Paris on March 1, 2025, at the age of 22. He suffered from a rare genetic disorder called POLG, a mitochondrial disorder that leads to progressive organ failure. He was first diagnosed with the disease at age 14, although he had been affected since birth. It impairs energy production in the body’s cells and affects various organ systems, including the brain, nerves, liver, muscles, and eyes.

Just a few years later, a tragic accident occurred: On August 29, 1935, King Leopold lost control of his car on a road near Küssnacht am Rigi on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The car plunged down the embankment. Queen Astrid was thrown from the car and slammed into a tree. She died at the scene of the accident in her husband’s arms as a result of a severe head injury.
