There are two scenarios: 1. William dies AFTER his coronation: If William dies first and his son, Prince George, ascends the throne, Princess Kate can become "Queen Mother" if she so wishes. However, the prerequisite is that William has been crowned and Kate therefore bears the title of "Queen Consort".

Scenario 2: William dies BEFORE his coronation: If Prince William dies before his coronation, Kate cannot take the title of "Queen Consort", simply because William has not been crowned. This in turn opens up a number of other options, for example she could be titled Dowager Princess of Wales.

Incidentally, there has been a similar scenario before. The Queen's parents had the same incident. King George, father of Queen Elizabeth II, died before his wife, Queen Mum.

At the coronation of King Charles III in May 2023, the question arose as to what would happen to Princess Kate if her husband, Prince William, died before her. What would the line of succession look like? There are two scenarios for this, which we present to you in the gallery.
