Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood sees director Quentin Tarantino transport viewers to the cultural moment of Hollywood in 1969. In the film, Leonardo DiCaprio plays "Rick Dalton," a fading former TV Western actor. His stunt-double, "Cliff Booth," is played by Brad Pitt. The film follows the two friends as they navigate the film industry and intersect with the life of actress Sharon Tate and the Manson Family.

Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood received glowing reviews and many major nominations this awards show season. Brad Pitt has particularly earned attention for his performance in the film, winning in the Supporting Actor category at virtually every award show so far.

The film is also nominated for Oscars in ten categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress.

What you need to know about Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood

Though Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood's leads, "Rick Dalton" and "Cliff Booth," are fictional, the film occurs against the backdrop of the real life "golden age of Hollywood" and the story of the Manson Family murders.

Historical figures including Bruce Lee, Sharon Tate, and Charles Manson are portrayed in the film. For the most rewarding viewing of the film, you should familiarize yourself with at least a very basic history of the Manson Family murders.

Tarantino film buffs will notice references to the director's other films (like Inglourious Basterds and Jackie Brown) sprinkled throughout Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood. Viewers will also find the director's trademarks of sharp dialogue and moments of tense violence in the film.

So far this awards season, 1917 has emerged as the favourite for Best Picture. It won the award at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes. Tarantino's film, however, should be viewed as following most closely behind 1917. Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood was the only other film to win the top prize at a major award show when it did so at the Critics' Choice Awards.
