The series 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter ran from 2002 until 2005. The "Hennessy" family of five from Michigan have a crazy family life. "Paul," the family's father, tries to keep his two teenage daughters, "Bridget" and "Kerry" under control. His son "Rory" also presents a challenge as well as his wife "Cate," who has decided to return to her job as a nurse.

John Ritter slipped into the role of family man "Paul Hennessy" back in 2002. After his wife "Cate" returns to her job at the hospital, "Paul" is stuck with all of his three kids. The working journalist tries to keep his kids under control, but his children seem to present a challenge. He starts to work from home, which gives "Paul" more time to get involved in his daughter's relationships.

During the rehearsals for 8 Simple Rules, Ritter reported having painful chest cramps, which quickly landed him in the hospital. It was there where he passed away due to aortic dissection on September 11, 2003. He was 54 years old.
