According to People, the new series is set many years after the 1995 hit. Cher is now a successful professional and a mother. But her biggest challenge turns out to be raising a teenage daughter, whose high school years leave Cher feeling just as overwhelmed as she once was herself. The official logline puts a familiar spin on the premise: Cher may have much of her life figured out, but parenting a teenager makes her feel “clueless” all over again. Now 49, Silverstone is returning not only as the star of the series but also as one of its creative forces behind the scenes.
The Original Creative Team Is Back
Fans of the original film have another reason to celebrate: key members of the original creative team are returning as well. Writer and director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence will both serve as executive producers. The limited series is being written by Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss. According to Deadline, filming is expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027, giving the beloved story a fresh format while preserving the spirit of the original.
This Time, Cher Is Raising a Teenager
Rather than relying on nostalgia alone, the sequel shifts the focus to a new phase of Cher’s life. High school crushes and teenage drama have been replaced by family responsibilities, career demands, and the challenges of parenthood. That fresh perspective is reportedly one of the reasons Silverstone was willing to return. She had previously admitted she was hesitant about revisiting such an iconic role.
"I never thought that that was something I would ever do because I wouldn’t wanna mess up this thing that we all love so much," Silverstone told People.
