Fran Drescher is joining the cast of the second season of the German series Die Zweiflers. The 69-year-old American actress will take on a leading role as Melissa in the upcoming episodes, which will be available on ARD's streaming platform starting January 15, 2027.
The series continues to follow the Jewish Zweifler family from Frankfurt after its award-winning first season. Drescher, who rose to international fame in the 1990s with the hit sitcom The Nanny, is one of the most recognizable faces on American television.
Fran Drescher Joins Six New Episodes of Die Zweiflers
The second season will feature six 45-minute episodes. Returning cast members include Sunnyi Melles and Mark Ivanir as Mimi and Jackie Zweifler, alongside Aaron Altaras and Saffron Marni Coomber as Samuel and Saba. Eleanor Reissa, Deleila Piasko, Leo Altaras, Lena Klenke, and Nora Waldstätten will also return.
In addition to Drescher, newcomers include Martina Gedeck, Esther Schweins, Ilja Richter, Michael Maertens, Dov Glickman, and David Schütter.
Series creator David Hadda once again co-wrote the scripts with Sarah Hadda and Juri Sternburg, while sharing directing duties with Lauro Cress.
Fran Drescher's Role Was Rewritten Just for Her
According to Der Spiegel, the production team approached Drescher while searching for an international star to join the series.
"And then we just went ahead and asked Fran Drescher. And she said yes, she'd be willing to speak," Hadda reportedly revealed during ARD's Series Spotlight 2026/27 presentation.
However, the actress was apparently not entirely convinced by the role initially offered to her. The creative team subsequently reworked another character and approached her again.
A Decades-Old Crime Threatens the Zweifler Family
The upcoming season will bring several new challenges for the family. An unresolved crime dating back to the 1950s resurfaces, stirring up long-buried tensions. Meanwhile, the return of Shimon, Symcha's brother, adds another layer of conflict.
The family's Zweifler Deli is also facing bankruptcy proceedings, while the grandparents have mysteriously disappeared.
As the family struggles with these challenges, Mimi takes on greater responsibility in an effort to hold everyone together. Samuel hopes to launch his own music label, Dana fights to keep the family united, and Leon gets an opportunity to secure a scholarship in New York.
Die Zweiflers Returns After Major Award Success
The first season of Die Zweiflers, released in 2024, quickly established itself as one of Germany's most acclaimed television productions.
The series received several honors at the Cannes International Series Festival and the German Television Awards. In 2025, it also won the prestigious Grimme Prize in the fiction category.
Speaking about the upcoming installment, creator David Hadda emphasized that the team wanted to deliver something fresh rather than simply repeat its earlier success.
As quoted by DWDL, he explained: "We're not making a second season—we're making a new first season."
