The Season 3 finale of 'Euphoria' closed with a tribute that linked the series’ past to one of its most painful real-life losses. During "Rue Bennett’s" death sequence in episode 8, viewers saw never-before-seen footage of Angus Cloud alongside Zendaya from early production on the HBO drama. The clip showed their characters, "Fezco" and "Rue", standing in a grassy field with cracked beers in hand, smiling into the distance. It was a short moment, but it carried major weight for a series built on memory, grief, addiction, and the people left behind.

Sam Levinson Adds Angus Cloud Footage to Finale
Series creator Sam Levinson said the material came from test footage shot during the first season in 2019. "It’s footage that never made it into the show. I thought, ‘Oh, it’d be great to use that footage and just see him again — and see the two of them,’” he told Page Six. The choice gave the finale a deeply personal layer without changing the story’s direction. Instead of forcing a new ending for Fezco, the show folded Cloud’s presence into "Rue’s" final moments and let the memory speak for itself.
"Fezco" Stays Present Even From Prison
Levinson had already decided that "Fezco" would remain alive in the story, though offscreen and in prison. That approach allowed the character to stay part of the season’s world through conversation and memory rather than a recast or abrupt write-off. According to Page Six, Levinson said, "His arc this season is really kind of amazing, despite the fact that he’s in prison and we don’t see him." In the finale, that choice paid off by making Fez feel present in Rue’s inner life, especially as her memories blurred with the episode’s fatal turn.
"Rue’s" Death Sequence Returns to the Old Store
The unseen clip appeared as "Rue" revisited key parts of her life in a hallucinatory sequence. Midway through “In God We Trust,” she takes fentanyl-laced pills given to her by "Alamo Brown", played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. As the episode moved deeper into "Rue’s" final visions, she returned to the old convenience store where "Fez" once worked. There, the flashback with Cloud appeared. The scene tied "Fez" to "Rue’s" sense of safety and history, reminding viewers how central their bond had been even when the character was physically absent from the season.
Angus Cloud Tribute Echoes the Show’s Fentanyl Story
The tribute landed with added force because Cloud died on July 31, 2023, at age 25 from an accidental fentanyl overdose. Levinson said the season aimed to confront that reality through "Rue’s" story and the broader danger facing young people. He also explained that the decision to include the footage came just five days before the finale aired, making the sequence a late but carefully shaped addition. The ending also followed "Nate Jacobs’" death in the previous episode, leaving the series in a stark place as questions continue around a possible fourth season.
