Demi Moore, who was considered the favorite for the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in 'The Substance', experienced a big surprise when Mikey Madison won the award for her performance in 'Anora'.
The camera caught Moore's tense reaction. As lip reader Nicola Hickling analyzed for the 'Daily Mail': "Demi says ‘nice,’ but she isn’t smiling when she says it. Her body is almost nodding like she had to force herself to say it."

Mikey Madison, who was honored for her role as young escort "Ani" in 'Anora,' used her acceptance speech to pay tribute to the sex worker community. She said: "I also just want to, again, recognize and honor the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community, has been one of the highlights of this incredible — of this entire — incredible experience." Madison also thanked her fellow nominees, including Demi Moore, and was honored to be recognized alongside them.

The 2025 Oscars brought more surprises. Adrien Brody won his second Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for 'The Brutalist', while Zoe Saldaña was named Best Supporting Actress in 'Emilia Pérez'. Kieran Culkin opened the show with a win for Best Supporting Actor in 'A Real Pain'. 'Anora' also triumphed in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Director categories, both won by Sean Baker.
