Queen Margrethe (86) will not attend King Harald’s funeral in Oslo on Wednesday. The former monarch had originally been scheduled to travel to Norway alongside Queen Mary, King Frederik, Crown Prince Christian, and Princess Benedikte.
Now, the Danish royal court has changed its plans. On Sunday, the former monarch was admitted to Rigshospitalet after feeling unwell. Doctors detected a new hematoma in the hip area, as well as mild dehydration. The palace announced her hospitalization on September 6.
Queen Margrethe Will Remain in the Hospital Next Week
A statement from the palace said that Margrethe is expected to remain in the hospital for observation and treatment through next week. As a result, her trip to Oslo has been canceled.
“Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet on Sunday after feeling unwell. A new blood clot was detected in her hip area, as well as mild dehydration, both of which are currently being actively treated,” communications director Nina Z. Munch-Perrin said in a statement. Regarding the queen’s current condition, she also noted that Margrethe is in good spirits and doing well under the circumstances.
The Trip With Mary, Frederik, and Christian Had Already Been Planned
A Danish delegation was scheduled to attend the memorial service in Norway. In addition to the former queen, Queen Mary, King Frederik, Crown Prince Christian, and Princess Benedikte were also expected to attend.
Following Margrethe’s cancellation, however, the royal family’s travel plans have changed. The royal court said that further details would be provided at a later date. King Harald’s funeral will take place on Wednesday at Oslo Cathedral. Margrethe had planned to bid farewell to the late Norwegian king there alongside her family.
Margrethe Has Already Been to Rigshospitalet Several Times in 2026
This is not her first hospital stay this year. The former Danish monarch was treated at Rigshospitalet in May for heart problems and subsequently underwent a balloon angioplasty. Shortly after being discharged, she had to be readmitted to the hospital.
A CT scan revealed a hematoma in the hip area, which was attributed to a previous fall. Following her treatment, Margrethe gradually returned to her public duties.
