At just 22 years old, Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway is facing major changes much earlier than expected. Instead of a calm training period, Mette-Marit’s daughter is now stepping into a far more prominent role within the royal family. The situation is serious: multiple crises are hitting the family simultaneously, significantly altering the young royal’s daily life.
While other European heirs often enjoy more freedom at her age, the pressure is mounting fast in Norway. For Ingrid Alexandra, this means not only representing her country but also making personal sacrifices.
Ingrid Alexandra Expected to Ease the Royal Burden Sooner
The reason for this sudden shift is a staffing shortage at the court. Crown Princess Mette-Marit underwent a lung transplant in June, while King Harald and Queen Sonja are now nearly 90 years old.
According to the Danish newspaper BT, there is even discussion about amending the constitution to allow Ingrid Alexandra to serve as regent in the future. This would accelerate her transition from training to full royal duties.
Historian Emma Paaske Sees a Heavy Burden
Historian Emma Paaske clearly described how difficult this period must be for the princess. “A lot is going on in her personal life right now, which must make it incredibly difficult for her to simultaneously fulfill a role that is almost equivalent to that of an heir to the throne,” she told BT.
She added: “She has a lot to deal with, and compared to other young royals, it’s almost a little unfair. Everything around her feels uncertain.”
The historian even warned that these early commitments could be harmful: “It’s meant to provide relief, but it can also be destructive if she isn’t allowed to enjoy her education and youth in peace.”
Ingrid Alexandra Celebrates with Sverre Magnus in New Jersey
Despite the pressure, the princess recently showed a lighter side. Together with her brother Prince Sverre Magnus, she attended Norway’s Round of 16 World Cup match against Brazil at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The siblings were overjoyed as Norway defeated the five-time world champions 2–1. Ingrid Alexandra had previously told VG how proud she was of the team and how soccer brings people together. The pair had also been at the stadium for the win over Senegal.
After the victory, they visited the team’s locker room, where they hugged Erling Haaland and other players. While the rest of the family cheered from home, the contrast between duty and joyful moments perfectly illustrates the balancing act the young princess faces right now.
