Actor Michael Douglas has confirmed that his chemistry with actor Kathleen Turner during the making of Romancing the Stone extended beyond the screen. In his memoir One Helluva Ride, Douglas writes that the two were not truthful when discussing their bond in past interviews. According to People Magazine, he says the public version of events was created to protect his family at the time. The admission adds a new chapter to the story behind one of the decade’s most popular screen pairings.

Michael Douglas Details a 40-Year Secret

Douglas writes that he and Turner had long described themselves as flirtatious co-stars who never crossed a line. In the book, he now says that account was false. "The truth is that during the production of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship," Douglas said according to People Magazine. He also explains that he was separated from his wife Diandra during filming, which shaped how he viewed the situation at the time and why the relationship stayed private for decades.

Diandra Douglas Visit Changed the Relationship

The memoir says the relationship ended after Diandra visited the Mexico set with their young son, Cameron. Douglas recalls that suspicion had already started to build, and a private conversation between Diandra and Turner shifted the dynamic. He writes that Turner did not want to interfere in a marriage that, from Diandra’s perspective, was still very much intact. After that, Douglas says he returned to Diandra for the sake of their son, though he now believes getting back together was a mistake.

The Jewel of the Nile Brought Them Back Together

Even after the romance ended, the two stars continued working together. Douglas says Turner wanted to avoid returning for The Jewel of the Nile, but contractual obligations brought her back for the sequel. During that production, they repaired their friendship and moved forward professionally. That mattered, because their on-screen partnership remained valuable in Hollywood. They later reunited again in The War of the Roses, showing that whatever had happened between them personally did not end their ability to collaborate in major studio projects.

Friendship Continued Into Later Years

Their connection did not stop in the 1980s. As reported by Yahoo Entertainment, Douglas and Turner stayed close over the years and even worked together again on The Kominsky Method in 2021. Douglas later divorced Diandra in 1995. He married actor Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, and they share two children. Turner and Douglas, meanwhile, remained friends despite the complicated history he now describes in print. One Helluva Ride is set for publication on October 6, bringing these personal memories into public view.
